Sand Lake native Rudy Winkler sixth in Olympic Hammer Throw

On Wednesday (4-Aug.), Sand Lake native
Rudy Winkler
, finished seventh in the Hammer Throw at the Tokyo Olympic Games with a throw of 77.08m (252-10). In the qualifying round on Monday he threw 78.81m (258-6). Poland's Wojciech Nowicki won the gold medal with a throw of 82.52m (270-9). At the Olympic Trials in June Winkler broke the 25 year old U.S. record with a throw of 82.71m (271-4).
Winkler graduated from Averill Park High School in 2013 and then earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell in 2017. Following graduation he earned a masters degreee from Rutgers University. He is currently a volunteer assistant coach at Rutgers and works in cybersecurity in the healthcare industry.
