Adirdonack Results Scoreboard

On Sunday (1-Aug) the 2021 USATF National Junior Olympic Championships concluded in Jacksonville, Florida. The championships were held on the campus of North Florida University. USATF Adirondack was represented by five athletes who competed in 12 individual events.  5432 athletes from 49 states competed during the sevens days of competition that began on Monday (26-Jul).

The storyline of the meet for the Adirondack athletes were Neil Howard III (In a NY Minute) and Timothy Jeralds (unattached) earning a total of four all-American honors.  Athletes earned all-American status by placing in the top eight in an event.  Each all-American was presented with a championship medal, an all-American patch, and a coveted Junior Olympic all-American hat.

Howard earned three all-American hats including a national title in 15-16 boys Decathlon.  In the 10 event competition he scored 6316 points to out run jump, and throw Kenneth Byrd of North Carolina by over 500 points.  Following the Decathlon, which concluded on Wednesday (28-Jul), he finished second in the Pole Vault (4.35m / 14-3¼) on Friday and then fifth in the 400m Hurdles (56.94) on Saturday.
IN THEIR WORDS - Neil Howard III

I knew I was going to have to work hard coming into the meet, especially with the Decathlon because I had only ever done the events individually, but the heat was a factor that made conditions more difficult. Going out for the 100m at the beginning of the Decathlon was really energizing. I’m happy I was able to get it done and set myself up for next year to improve.

Joining Howard as an all-American was Timothy Jeralds who finished third in the 15-16 boys 2000m Steeplechase.  Jeralds ran 7:11.68 to earn his trip to the awards podium to receive his championship medal and all-American hat and patch.

Like Howard, Jeralds had a very busy week in Jacksonville.  In addition to the Steeplechase he competed in three other events ranging from the 110m Hurdles to the 3000m.  He finished 22nd in the 400m Hurdles (1:02.18), 28th in the 3000m (10:46.06) and 28th in the 100m Hurdles (19.02).  His older brother, Tobias Jeralds finished 16th in the 17-18 boys Javelin (40.41m / 132-7)  32nd in the 1500m (4:28.79) and 52nd in the 800m (2:07.18).

IN THEIR WORDS - Timothy

Competing at a Junior Olympic is already a great achievement but also being the top 8 in an event and becoming an All American is probably the biggest running achievement I have had in my running career. Becoming an All American has been something I have wanted to achieve since the first time I went to a Junior Olympic meet. Finally becoming one is like a dream come true. My experience at the Junior Olympics this year was a bit different because of the Covid regulations. With getting tested before you are able to compete but besides that the competitiveness, organization, and hard work was the same as the previous years has been. With the exception of more people in some events. Competing in such a high level is pretty nerve racking but I enjoy the experience and opportunity. It is not something for everyone cause you have to work hard and put effort into it but if it’s for you then It’s a great way to meet new people and it helps push you run, jump, snd throw your best.

Just missing all-American status was Jason Colindres (unattached) who finished ninth in the 15-16 boys 400m Hurdles running 58.69.

Clare Howard (unattached) finished 19th in the 17-18 girls 400m hurdles running 1:06.48.
